Written for the Windows Of The Soul Exhibition
Pat Crawford
Vision is simply perception, one person’s reality,
The interpretation of electrical signals gathered and transmitted to the brain,
A mechanism to make sense of our surroundings.
In my mind’s eye there is an ever changing canvass of images
As if conjured from the vivid colours of an artist’s palette,
Not the blackness, often thought to be the lot of those without sight.
Other senses come to the fore, subtle and nuanced in their depth,
So surprising in their power to convey an understanding of the environment
From hearing the softest whisper of a cobweb tearing
Or breathing in the scent of approaching rain
To feeling the density and proximity of something with the whole body.
You too can choose to experience life through other senses.
For perhaps latent, they remain available to us all.
