Blue Trees Old Town - Samantha Leftwich
In this collaboration, Lindsey showed Samantha her original artwork ‘Blue Trees Old Town’. Samantha has a vivid imagination. She described what she saw in Lindsey’s piece and Lindsey painted a second piece to describe her response.
Lindsey’s original artwork
Lindsey’s blue trees old town - 45 x 45 cm oil on canvas
This painting depicts three skeletal trees which rise from the bottom of the painting of the against a lilac grey blue wall. The wall occupies the whole of the background with the exception of a rectangle of blue sky in the top left-hand corner. The three trees are loosely painted and appear like ghosts with leafless branches reaching to the top and occupying three quarters of the canvas. The weblike branches on the top left of the painting are silhouetted against the blue sky with a scattering of dried leaves casting shadows on the wall behind.
Samantha’s interpretation
Samantha’s blue trees old town - 45 x 45 cm all on canvas
When Samantha looked at Lindsey’s original artwork, she thought that the tree branches looked like the blood vessels at the back of her eye (retina). Lindsey has captured this and the majority of the canvas is filled with a glowing orange/red disc dotted with splashes of light yellow against against a dark blue grey background. The skeletal trunks and branches of the 3 trees appear like blood vessels crossing in front of the disc and disappearing into the dark background .The top left-hand corner is painted duck egg blue against which the web like veins of the blood vessels are silhouetted
